„Budowanie świata. Wokół twórczości Tomasza Mańkowskiego”

In the book “Building the World. Around the Work of Tomasz Mańkowski”, Michał Wiśniewski presents the unique story of the main protagonist’s life against the background of the fate of Polish architecture, extremely complicated due to the political history of our country.

The introduction to the book, entitled “An Architect in Search of Freedom”, was written by professor Jacek Purchla, and the afterword “The Last of the Mohicans” is by Ewa Mańkowska-Grin, the architect’s daughter, and Irek Grin.

The story of Tomasz Mańkowski forms an alternative history of Polish architecture, but one which happened for real. He started in Cracow in the Nowa Huta era, but was omitted by socialist realism. He taught housing architecture, but he didn’t build high-rises, he even promoted single-family housing. He came from behind the Iron Curtain, but he studied under Louis Kahn. He discovered postmodernism early, but he never renounced modernism. And when the Polish People’s Republic fell, he invited friends from Poland and abroad to join him in designing an experimental care centre – the Children’s Village. A fascinating output and attitude of a creator who, regardless of circumstances, designed architecture which was deeply humanistic and the best in given conditions.

[…] the role of [Tomasz Mańkowski] in the education of generations of architects and his significant achievements in the field of Polish architecture for years have been demanding a summary and a thorough presentation. What is more, both I and many of the Professor’s collaborators and students, we didn’t know everything about Him. This gap is filled by the excellent book written by Michał Wiśniewski, which systematizes Tomasz Mańkowski’s professional achievements. It is complemented by an exquisite introduction by professor Jacek Purchla, and a moving account by the Professor’s daughter, Ewa Mańkowska-Grin and her husband Irek Grin, which reveals the tragic fate of the Eibenschütz family. During World War II, the world of the Professor’s youth was totally destroyed, and he himself miraculously survived, but lost the majority of his family and school friends.

I sincerely recommend this historically important and moving publication.
